Easy Tips to Save While Abroad for First-Time Travellers

| Travel Guide, Travel Tips

Travelling is one of the best ways to gain experience but that doesn’t mean you have to splurge to get the best on your travels, especially when you’re a young traveller hitting the road for the first time!

A tighter budget doesn’t necessarily mean you have to resort to extreme frugality either — it just means that you can save more to spend on things that matter, such as emergencies (yes, it happens!) and other once-in-a-lifetime activities that you should spend a few extra bucks on.

If you’re a first-time traveller, we’re here to share a few easy tips on how you can do save while travelling abroad:

  • Pack light. It’s only natural to feel the need to pack more things for emergencies or those ‘just-in-case’ situations. However, it’s actually smarter to pack only the things you need for your trip. It makes it easy to travel, and doing away with heavy items can save you a lot of trouble — not to mention the extra charges for excess baggage at the airport, too!
  • Opt to stay at a hostel. There are a lot of backpacker inns around the globe, and they are cheap to stay in as well! It might be the best time to get to know other people from different countries too. Hostels usually come with a kitchenette that allows you to cook, so it helps to save up as well!
  • Skip the taxis and cabs. When travelling to countries with relatively good public transport, opt for that instead. Taxis usually charge quite a lot and it’s not worth the extra cash. Besides, it’s actually more rewarding experience to take the public transport too! Or better yet, walk to your next destination to stay healthy!
  • Keep your cash and valuables separately. It may sound like an odd tip, but trust us on this one: by keeping your valuables such as cash, passport, and IDs in separate compartments/places, it prevents you from losing them altogether should accidents happen, such as being pickpocketed or robbed. And of course, never leave your items unattended.
  • Always bring a reusable water bottle with you. You spend your time walking around most of the time, so keeping a water bottle with you is necessary. There might be some stores that overcharge for water, so it’s important to pack your own water bottle that you can refill at your hostel. Besides, in doing this you get to save the earth by minimizing waste!
